I have known Jo since she was about 18 months old. Her parents had a wine bar in Southampton and my mum was their bookkeeper. My mum went on and on about how cute this little girl was and how much I’d love her, to the point that my teenage brain was resisting meeting her cos ‘I didn’t care about some kid I’d never met’ god mum! Well I gave in and promptly fell in love. She was cute and funny and simply gorgeous and we immediately became Big Jo and Little Jo.
In about 1983 Anne & Tony, Jo’s parents, had a few weeks in the summer without an au pair so I looked after Little Jo and she became my little sister. As Jo grew up I took her to gigs, west end shows, tried to introduce her to the joy of shoes and she repeatedly told me that my bedroom and then my house was untidy. ‘Big Jo you are so messy’ she had signs of OCD even then!
CUT TO 28 YEARS LATER…….and Jo is now a big girl and 30 years old!
left to right is Emma (Jo’s real sister), Tony, Little Jo and Anne.
We all ventured over to Bideford in Devon for Jo’s party and met with family and friends some old and some new (to me) and had a great evening.
There are more photos from the night on Jo’s facebook for those at the party who want to see embarrassing dance floor shots!
Towards the end of the evening Jamie, Jo’s LONG TERM boyfriend, called everyone to order to thank them for coming and he and Jo gave out a few birthday cards to people that were sharing Jo’s birthday week.
To say there was an air of anticipation at this point in the evening was the bloody understatement of the century. Jo and Jamie have been together for a while, a long while. Every time I speak to her I ask if she’s engaged yet or pregnant but she always just laughed and said no not yet. I’d even joked with her earlier in the day that much as I approved of Jamie I was disappointed that she’d let Prince William slip through her fingers. As soon as I heard Jamie calling everyone up to the DJ setup I legged it up the wine bar thinking ‘god please don’t ask her until I’m there’.
It was then that this happened.
and I lost it big time. The next batch of photos I took were not greatly in focus, based on the fact that I was crying like a baby and I mean sobbing. Other than Ann and Tony I’ve been waiting the longest for this day. This is the last usable one I had!
And this is the reason why I was so emotional.
Jo was my bridesmaid when she was 6.
Congratulations Jo and Jamie!
I love you both to bits and can’t wait for your wedding and don’t worry I’ve already asked a friend to 2nd shoot for me so at the points of the day when I’ll be in bits there will be someone pressing the shutter without mascara running down their face unable to focus!
